Variability and distinctiveness are the characteristics of any full grain leather but more so with elk leather. If looking for mass produced piece with no variation in texture or shading, elk accessories are not for you.
Elk leather has as an unmistakable look and feel. It is luxuriously supple, rich and soft to the touch.
Elk leather has superior strength. Elk leather accessories are not easily stretched out of shape due to high stretch resistance and strength of the leather. Durable elk leather is also highly resistible to damage like tearing or scratching, and it doesn't crack or stiffen as quickly as cowhide. Elk skin is also resistant to oils and moisture.
Superior Nordic quality and responsibly sourced leather
The characteristics of leather are partly a result of where the animal has lived. Elk leather used in products available through us comes from free roaming elks in Nordics, where the climate produces the best quality hides.
No animal died for their hide
Elk is a wild animal that has been part of Finnish nature since the Stone Ages. Elk does not need human care or resources, but lives its life free in nature. As king of the forest has no natural enemies, the stock must be regulated by the authorities. Stock management is conducted to ensure the continuity and viability of the species. Overpopulation would cause malnutrition in animals and increase fatal road accidents and forest damage.
Genuine ethical leather is made from hides of free and happy animals. Our hides will never be mass produced, but individual natural products. On hides, you can still see traces of a life lived free: small scratches or abrasions, for example, when an animal has scratched itself against a tree.
Responsibly produced genuine leather is a greener choice than artificial leather
Most of the "vegan leather" is made of plastic, especially polyurethane, PVC or polyester. All of these are fossil-fueled and non-biodegradable materials. Genuine leather products have a significantly longer lifespan than faux leather products. With good care, the skin will age beautifully and last from generation to generation, creating a unique patina.
The hides are tanned with chrome or vegetable tanning. Plant tanning is a millennia-old method and its proper implementation requires a thorough knowledge of traditional craftsmanship. In vegetable tanning, tannins come from natural materials, such as bark, instead of chemicals. Organic leather is the result of responsible and environmentally friendly production.
How to look after your elk skin accessories
No matter what kind of elk leather accessories you have, you will have a unique piece of natural art that will last and last for generations if it is cared for properly.
- Remove stains as soon as you notice them with soft cloth. Elk skin takes well to washing and retains its supple nature if dried slowly. If stain is persistent, apply a cleaner specially made for leather.
- Moisturize your bag with a leather conditioner to keep it supple. To prevent flaking and wrinkling, apply leather conditioner to a soft cloth and gently rub over entire bag. Depending on the dryness or humidity in your climate, apply conditioner at least twice a year, up to once a month or so, to keep your leather bag soft and supple.
- Store your unused bag in cotton bag to restore and hold its shape.
